Cookie policy
What gets stored on your device, and why.
Who is asked, and how
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, Google's consent message appears first, with Consent and Manage options; under the second you can allow or refuse each purpose, or refuse them all. Until you answer, only the cookies marked necessary below can be set, and you can change your answer at any time with the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
From anywhere else, Canada included, no message is shown and the statistics and advertising cookies work by default; the last section explains how to refuse them.
Necessary — always on
| Cookie | Set by | What for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
__cf_bm | Cloudflare | Tells bots from humans; protects the site from automated abuse | 30 minutes |
cf_clearance | Cloudflare | Records that you passed a security check | Up to 1 year |
_GRECAPTCHA | reCAPTCHA on the contact form — only if you visit the contact page | 6 months | |
wordpress_*, wp-settings-* | WordPress | Only ever set for a logged-in editor of this site, never for visitors | Session / 1 year |
FCCDCF | Stores the answer you gave in Google's consent message (Europe), so it is not asked on every page | 13 months | |
FCNEC | Keeps Google's consent message working correctly | 1 year | |
edm_fav_* | This site | Local storage, not a cookie: remembers if you dismissed the "add to favourites" prompt so we do not nag you. Never leaves your device | Until you clear it |
Statistics
In Europe, only if you accept statistics.
| Cookie | Set by | What for | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Tells one visitor from another so visits are counted once | 2 years |
_ga_4LNQ2DS4FG | Google Analytics | Keeps the current visit together (pages read, length of visit) | 2 years |
Advertising
Ads on this site are served by Google AdSense. Where advertising cookies are allowed, Google may set cookies
such as __gads, __gpi and IDE to measure ads, cap how often you
see them and personalise them; the exact names and lifetimes are Google's and are listed in
Google's own table.
If you refuse them in Google's message, ads can still appear but are not personalised. You can also turn personalisation off in
Google's ad settings.
Turning cookies off
In Europe the simplest way is the Privacy and cookie settings link in the footer. Anywhere, Google Analytics can be refused with Google's opt-out add-on, and every browser lets you block or delete cookies — usually under Settings → Privacy. Blocking the Cloudflare ones may mean you see a security check more often; nothing else on this site will break.
